Protest erupts as Durban Metro police officer’s murder case continues

The case of Constable Sizwe Clinton Ngema, who is facing charges of theft and murder for the murder of 23-year-old Bianca Yolanda Khuzwayo, resumed today at Durban Magistrate's Court.

THE horrendous murder of pregnant Durban Metro police officer Yolanda Bianca Khuzwayo has sparked outrage amongst the public, after the 23-year-old was murdered in the early hours of Sunday morning, March 31.

The alleged murderer, her boyfriend and fellow metro police officer, Constable Sizwe Ngema, made his second appearance at the Durban Magistrate’s Court this morning. Ngema is facing two charges –  one count of murder for the murder of Bianca Khuzwayo and one count of theft for allegedly taking the young girl’s phone on the night of the incident.

The murder of Bianca Khuzwayo comes a few months after the country commemorated 16 Days of Activism for Women and Children, and members of the public are demanding justice for the slain police officer, which struck a chord with many people after videos of Khuzwayo’s final moments, which were allegedly captured by Ngema, were shared widely on social media.

A group of women from Lifeline Durban were present outside the court today, protesting against gender-based violence. The case has been remanded to Monday, April 15, while Ngema seeks legal representation.
