Man shot dead in alleged hijacking incident in Umbilo

Melbourne Road in Umbilo has been closed temporarily as SAPS investigates an alleged hijacking incident which left one man dead.

PARAMEDICS and police responded to the scene of a shooting incident this afternoon where it’s alleged that a man was fatally shot during a hijacking.

According to Advanced Life Support Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, paramedics responded to the scene today (April 8) at 16:30 on Melbourne Road in the Umbilo area.

“On arrival, paramedics were shown to a man lying on the roadway who showed no signs of life. The man in his early forties had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his upper body, and there was nothing the paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased on the scene,” said Jamieson.

Jamieson said it is alleged that the man was hijacked and his vehicle taken, however, SAPS is still investigating the circumstances around the shooting.

Melbourne Road has been closed while SAPS investigates.
