Durban Community Chest catches Comrades fever

With the Comrades Marathon fever in the air, Community Chest is gearing up to do what it does best, aiding the less privileged members of the community. The organisation hopes to top last year's donation mark.

LAST year the Community Chest Comrades superheroes raised an astounding R799 879 for Early Childhood Development (ECD). And this year the team is determined to go beyond this mark, with the help of donations.

The Community Chest’s Superheroes campaign saw 58 Comrades runners battling the race of endurance. Community Chest Durban and Pietermaritzburg are the official charities of the Comrades Marathon Association.

“All funds were donated to ECD centres supporting over 7845 children daily. ECD is crucial for mental, physical, and social development. It fosters lifelong learning, cognitive development, social skills, and independence, and helps identify developmental issues early,” said Fadeela Deedat, PRO for the Community Chest.

This year Sara Mahomedy will run her third Comrades marathon to raise funds for the less privileged. “This year I’m running with my heart. When my feet hurt, it’s the thought of helping thousands of little ones at Early Childhood Development centres that will help me to the finish. Community Chest not only supports children, but also the elderly, disabled, mentally handicapped, STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Math) projects and more. I like that they give 100%, so when you donate to my Comrades Marathon run, 100% of all proceeds are directly channeled to those needing it. The wife, mother of two and occupational therapist has a passion for fitness and healthy living. Mahomedy is a Comrades Marathon Superhero and will run part of the race in a red cape.
The ‘Community Chest Comrades Superheroes’ is an exciting campaign that will see Community Chest Comrades runners running the Ultimate Human Race on Sunday, June 8.
Mahomedy aims to raise R20 000 in her quest to attain her third Comrades Marathon medal.
