Springs too good for East Rand United

Despite this being ERU’s third consecutive defeat since the start of the league, its captain Peter Mnguni believes not all hope is lost.

The men from Reiger Park’s East Rand United had another tough day at the office when they played their third match of the Valke Peregrine League against Springs Rugby Club at the Olympia Park on June 5.

Springs clinched a 33-7 win over the visiting team,

When the whistle was blown for half-time, the score was 14-0 in favour of Springs.

ERU prop Thulani Plaatjie scored the only try for the visitors.

Quizzed on the game, United head coach Godfrey Mbange commented: ” We struggled against Springs and were always on the back foot. We’re short on props and can’t play our best rugby without them,” he said.

Despite this being ERU’s third consecutive defeat since the start of the league, its captain Peter Mnguni believes not all hope is lost.

“Springs were very good in the scrums and that is how they won the game. However, it’s our culture to never quit. Everyone believed that this year ERU will be down and out with no sponsors or lights at our training grounds, but here we are fighting fit.

“We have three games left that we can still win, with bonus points, to make it to the semi-finals. So we will now focus more on playing running rugby to earn a spot in the semi-final,” he said.
