Tell us more about yourself.
I’m from Delmas and I’m a rugby lover and player, playing union, sevens and rugby league. I’m also a father of two (Zimkhona and Micayla), husband of Veronica and fitness coach of the Dreamers Rugby Club.
When did you join East Rand United?
I joined the team in 2015 and played sevens for ERU. From there never looked back.
Share your thoughts on being selected to lead ERU for this season.
It is one of the biggest challenges of my rugby life, as ERU is more than club rugby, it’s community rugby. It’s going to be a great task because I will be doing it for the whole community and rugby lovers.
How have your teammates responded to you as their new leader?
Last year before lockdown, I was captain against Wits and this year they just wanted me to carry on where I left off.
You are a blindside flank. Can you play any other positions?
I am six, seven and eight; however, I can cover where I’m needed (four to 15).
Which challenges are you looking forward to the most?
To get the green light on supporters coming to the field so that all can see ERU at its best and playing running rugby (winning the league).
United had a tough start to the Valke Peregrine League this year. How do you keep your team motivated?
By being a captain on and off the field. Working hard behind the scenes and making sure everybody is happy. I have regular chats with the players and I’m always willing to take a knock for the team.
What about the game of rugby drives you?
What drives me in rugby is when I’m between the four lines living and people are watching and supporting me.
Do you have any pre-game rituals?
There is a drill that we do when we warm up, and that is where our click and motivation comes in. We also like singing qwijo songs.
What would you like to achieve in the future?
I want to see young and talented players play rugby without being judged on their skin colour or background. Every player should get a fair chance to play for the Springboks.
