‘I’d rather be an undertaker than an ANC councillor’

DA Ekurhuleni caucus leader Shelly Loe said she’d rather be an undertaker or snake handler than an ANC councillor.

Loe said this during her speech at a council meeting, in the Germiston Council Chambers, on June 20.

“I have added a new job to the list of jobs I would not like to have, under any conditions,” she said.

Loe said she is always glad there are people who are willing to be snake handlers and undertakers, because “we need both in the world, but I’m very happy I don’t have to do either of them to earn a living”.

“But now there is one more on my list; namely, the job of an ANC councillor and, no, I would not like to be ANC councillor, I think I’d rather be an undertaker, if I had to choose,” said Loe.

She said she does not understand how ANC councillors defend the indefensible.

“How do they explain away broken promises?”

“How, above all, do they hold public meetings without getting lynched for their party’s shameful record of delivering houses and basic services?” she asked.

She said she would not like to face angry people day after day and try to justify the degrading circumstances they continue to live in, the appalling or non-existent services and the never-ending wasteful expenditure of this government.

ANC councillors hit back, with one telling Loe that she needs to understand people to be able to lead them.

“We tell no lies and we claim no easy points and that is how we lead,” he said.

The councillor told Loe that if she thinks she is leading but no one is following then she is taking a walk.

Council chief whip Robert Mashego weighed in and told the councillors to avoid vulgarising politics as vulgar “does not take us anywhere”.

“We must be mature and be ready to differ politically,” he said.

Mayor Mondli Gungubele also said certain language must not find its way into this house as it gets uglier and uglier.

“As a leader of a party leader, Loe should learn to balance national unity and partisan,” said Gungubele.
