The MEC of the Gauteng Provincial Finance Department, Mandla Nkomfe, together with staff members from his office, staff members from the provincial treasury and premier’s office, spent their 67 minutes at the Igugukethu Place of Safety Children’s Home in Boksburg.
The group of government officials donated clothes, food, tins of milk formula and nappies for the children of the home.
This was Nkomfe’s second visit to the home since he, together with the Gauteng Department of Finance, decided to adopt the home as one of their corporate social initiatives.
The group was given a tour around the home and the MEC noted all the challenges faced by the organisation, and said that he would work together with social development to help the home.
Nkomfe praised the centre for its sterling work on the work that they do with children, saying that it is linked to one of the top provincial government’s mandates, which is strengthening interventions to address violence against women and children and address substance abuse.
“The government appreciates the work put in by the social workers and all the staff members of the home.
“The determination, passion and hard work put in by the social workers despite all the challenges that they are faced with is commendable,” said Nkomfe.

“We have committed more than R1-b over the next three years to recruit additional social workers in the province, support the non-governmental organisation (NGO) sector, and also ensure the implementation of sector legislation.”
He added that organisations such as Igugulethu Centre need the support of the government and the community, because the home is at the forefront of assisting in building a society where children are provided with an environment that will enable them to succeed in school and grow healthy in life.
