Stalwart Gert Veldman dies after long illness
On Friday, July 12, Boksburg stalwart, Gert Veldman, died after a year-long illness.
Born in Lydenburg on June 13, 1929, Veldman moved to Boksburg to commence his Grade one at Witfield Laerskool, completing his Grade eight at former JM Louw.
A dedicated Boksburg citizen, as a young man he worked a number of jobs, including a flight steward, administrator as well as a waiter at the well-known La Conga Roadhouse.
In 1970 he started the renowned Vellas Printers and Stationers in Witfield.
He joined the Boksburg Municipality as caretaker in 1979, and was a beacon at the entrance of the then new Civic Centre building.
He received various merit awards for his dedication, helpfulness, friendliness and always going the extra mile.
His accolades include a merit award from The Institute of Town Clerks in 1985, the Rotary Club of Boksburg in 1991, and a merit certificate from the city of Boksburg in 1994.
He retired on June 1994.
