Most wanted truck hijacking, robbery syndicate nabbed
The EMPD believes it has made a breakthrough in truck hijackings and robberies following the arrest of suspects who have long been wanted for such crimes.
Truck hijacked in Boksburg recovered, cargo stolen
EMPD spokesman Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago said five men suspected of being involved in truck hijackings on the N3 freeway between Vosloorus and Heidelberg were apprehended at 10pm on May 31, on the N3 northbound, by the Petroport filling station.
Kgasago said the EMPD Community Liaison Unit members cornered the five men driving in a Toyota Avanza and seized three unlicensed firearms and 31 live rounds.
Over and above truck hijackings, said Kgasago, the arrested men are believed to be part of a gang that is responsible for business robberies in and around Ekurhuleni.
He said that in-depth investigations are underway to establish whether they can be positively linked to the crimes.
It was established that the suspects are from KwaZulu-Natal and hole up in hostels in Katlehong and Thokoza.
“The CLU members recovered a 9mm Daewoo pistol with eight live rounds, a 9mm Star pistol with 10 live rounds and a 9mm Vector pistol with 13 live rounds,” he added.
The arrested suspects are aged between 26 and 32.
They were charged at the Vosloorus Police Station and are expected to appear in the Vosloorus Magistrates Court soon.
