Dumpsite in Atlasville closed since Sunday

According to the councillor, the metro didn’t renew the contracts with the service providers in time which resulted in the mess.

The Atlasville dumpsite has been closed since Sunday, July 1 leaving residents with nowhere else to dump their refuse.

According to Ward 23 councillor André du Plessis, he was made aware of the situation on Sunday when residents in his ward went to the dumpsite.

“The residents were turned away and told to go and dump at the landfills because there’s no capacity to take in more refuse.

“I have contacted the Ekurhuleni offices and they said they are waiting for the new contractors to come on site.

“At the moment the waste on site has been piling up.

“This has a rippling effect because most of these garden services and people don’t want to go to these landfill sites because it’s too far for them which causes concern that they might dump on the side of the road or veld which will resort to illegal dumping.”

Du Plessis said the Atlasville dumpsite is under construction for upgrading.

“Now that the rubble has been thrown all over the place, it is holding up the construction work and adding extra costs for the metro and inconvenience for the community.

The Advertiser is still waiting for a response from the Ekurhuleni metro.
