Hospice Week is aimed at raising awareness about the essential services they provide, regardless of a patient's age, race or ability to pay

Hospice Week ended on May 10 but the organisation continues to encourage the public to remember their hard work in assisting those in need.

Running from May 3 to May 10, the week-long campaign was aimed at raising awareness about hospices and the valuable assistance these provide to patients with life-limiting illnesses and support to families.

The theme for this year’s Hospice Week was Passion for Compassion. Hospices used this week to raise awareness about the essential service they provide regardless of a patient’s age, race or ability to pay.

Jonquil Siepman, Hospice East Rand spokesperson, explained the aim for the week is to demonstrate compassion in communities and to reflect on the compassionate care that hospice workers provide for patients and their families.

In light of this, Hospice East Rand used its Facebook page to create a Wall of Compassion.

“Hospice East Rand affirms their belief that it is not about death and dying, but rather about life and living and the quality of life for those with life-limiting illnesses,” Siepman said. “We utilised our Facebook page (HospiceEastRand) to create a Wall of Compassion where community members were asked to write their story or words of compassion.
