Youth Develops the Nation launches online platform for learners
Industry professionals also upload general questions and videos where they answer what it takes to be a professional in those various career fields
Due to the Covid-19 lockdown regulations, the annual Youth Develops the Nation (YDN) Academy career expo will not take place this year.
However, YDN has found an innovative and smarter way of conducting their career expo digitally. In 2018, YDN hosted its June/July career expo at Sunward Park High School, while in 2019 it was held at Thuto Lesedi Secondary School in Vosloorus.
YDN founder and Bcom accounting graduate Dimpho Thobejane and her friend Thumeka Mbatha, who is an electrical engineering graduate, have now partnered with Transport Education and Training Authority to launch the Y-link.
This is a portal designed to provide a virtual education experience for the youth.
“The Y-link portal is a community platform where higher education institutions host webinars informing the youth about what courses they offer, how to calculate your APS score, general admission criteria to their institutions, how to apply, and what kind of careers one can venture into,” said Thobejane said.
“Industry professionals also upload general questions and videos where they answer what it takes to be a professional in those various career fields. There are also links that redirect learners to those institutions.”
Thobejane said students can also access past papers and memorandums through the portal. The portal also has a chatroom where learners share their academic challenges and offer study tips with each other. All these product offerings are monitored and updated by the adademy’s ICT team.
“To date, we have partnered with five higher education institutions which offers bursaries. Our plea is for more institutions, companies and departments to come on board and join the revolutionary way to educate,” Thobejane said.
YDN Academy was established in 2015 with the aim of assisting young people. The academy provides Saturday extra lessons classes to learners in Grade 10, 11 and 12 (focusing on English, mathematics, accounting, life sciences and physical science), varsity outings, assisting with online university applications and many more.
