#Covid-19: Residents warned to stay clear of Eskom employees while they’re working

Eskom warns the public against coming into close contact with its technicians amid the worrying surge in Covid-19 cases

The state-owned power utility says its technicians on the ground often encounter members of the public who blatantly disregard the Covid-19 regulations, putting themselves and employees at risk.

“Although we strictly follow regulations and apply the preventative measures, it is concerning that we are seeing a growing number of members of the public openly engaging with Eskom employees while they are busy with their operations. The problem is they do so in breach of the lockdown regulations and the social distancing protocols,” said the Eskom Gauteng Operating Unit in a statement.

“With this behavior, Eskom employees and members of the public alike may be exposed to possible Covid-19 infection. The power utility also warned that members of the public are exposing themselves to greater risks of electricity-related incidents by getting too close and causing disruptions.”

Eskom’s Ronel Kotze said: “Eskom strongly cautions against these practices. In addition, when technicians are required to enter a customer’s premises for any repair work or operations, Eskom would like to reiterate that the Covid-19 protocols will still be followed with no exceptions. This applies to customers as well in an effort to contain and prevent the spread of coronavirus.”

Kotze pointed out that in instances where customers do not fully comply with the protocols, Eskom employees have the right to refuse performing the work for their safety. “The work will be suspended and employees withdrawn from the area due to the risks of exposure.”

Eskom said in light of the escalating infection rate of Covid-19 in the country, Eskom as one of the essential service providers will continue to strengthen its measures to ensure its employees’ safety, and in particular those who are linked to keeping the lights on.

This is to ensure continuity of supply and minimal disruption as a result of the spread of coronavirus.

The utility also ensured the public that it will carry on prioritising critical services, some of which are essential maintenance, prepaid token-related and meter reading enquiries.

Customers are advised during this period to contact the power utility through one of the following channels: the contact centre on 08600 37566; the Eskom App; email customerservices@eskom.co.za or via SMS on 35328. Illegal connections may be reported anonymously on the Eskom crime line 0800 11 27 22.
