The incident reportedly happened at about 7.30pm on October 12 outside the store, located a few metres from the police station.
In the video, the officer can be seen punching Cassell to the ground and continuing to assault him until another police officer comes to the victim’s rescue.
According to information gathered from the victim and a police source, the officer was found to be intoxicated upon his arrest.
It is alleged the officer went to the store and demanded CCTV footage as part of an investigation to locate his child, who went missing last week.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Ndileka Cola confirmed the incident, saying the directorate is carrying out further investigations into the matter.
The officer will appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court today (October 16).
Cassell said the ordeal left him with eye, head and back injuries.
