Bokkie Park Craft Market celebrates 20 years

The market offers a variety of unique, handmade goods, tasty treats and a tea-garden where shoppers can relax while listening to live music

The Bokkie Park Food and Craft Market celebrated its 20th birthday in style with live entertainment, a balloon artist and fun activities for children at the Bokkie Park on October 3.

Janine Richardson and her mother, Joan Gould, started the market at the Bokkie Park after seeing a need for a market on the East Rand.

“My mother and I started the market because we are crafters but good markets were quite far from the East Rand. Our first market had 34 crafters and just grew from there. We have many crafters who have been with us for over 10 years – one has been with us from our very first market,” Janine said.

The market offers a variety of unique, handmade goods, tasty treats and a tea-garden where shoppers can relax while listening to live music. Furthermore, children can interact with animals at the Bokkie Park.

She pointed out that many of their crafters struggled when the market wasn’t operational during lockdown.

“The market has created a platform for people to generate an income by selling handmade crafts and food.

“We would like to thank all the crafters, food stalls and shoppers for their support over the years. We hope to have many more years at the Bokkie Park.”

Furthermore, the Advertiser has taken hands with the organisers of the craft market to make room for a car boot sale on the same premises, Southvale Road, Parkdene, every first Saturday of the month.

Janine and Joan also established the Bunny Craft Market at the Bunny Park in Benoni in January 2001.

The next Boksburg Advertiser Car Boot Sale will be held on November 7.

Covid-19 protocols will be observed at all times.

The event promises to be back with a bang as more traders have reserved their spot to sell their items, including crafts, second-hand goods, such as clothing, paintings, tools, kitchenware, books, toys, baby items, camping equipment, electronic equipment and others.
