Residents heed plea to support community garden

The Reiger Park Crisis Centre team’s appeal to the public to help provide the community vegetable garden with garden shades didn’t fall on deaf ears.

The hard-working team of gardeners at the centre previously told this publication the garden needed netting to protect their vegetables against the cold nights and birds destroying their crops and vegetables.
A few weeks after this publication ran the story requesting residents to support the charity project, three residents, who asked not to be identified, heeded the call and donated shade nets to the community garden.

According to one of the gardeners, Harry Jacobs, the use of the donated nets improved the quality of their vegetables as it protects it from birds, wind, cold in winter and solar radiation in summer seasons.
“Thanks a million to those who helped us. You are good Samaritans,” said Jacobs.

The facility in question had become a source of essential nutrients for hundreds of needy families in the township and surrounding informal settlements.
Apart from providing the community with the needed nutrients, the garden also helps to raise funds for the centre. The experienced gardeners also help teach residents to start their own vegetable gardens in their backyards. This programme is based on the principle that it is better to teach people to fish, rather than to keep on giving them fish.
