Three generations steer business in the right direction

Every successful family business has its own captivating and gloomy story to tell.
This resonates well with Kalan Hira, a fabric and novelty curtain shop situated at the East Rand Square which has been run by three generations since its establishment 85 years ago.
Over the years, the shop has become a trendsetter with its curtains, blinds and fabrics and has maintained its quality of customer service.
According to James Kalan, a senior partner in the business, the shop was established by his grandfather many years ago.
“Initially, my grandfather owned a general dealer store. But after seeing that his whole family were naturals when handling fabrics he decided the general dealer store would be transformed into a specialised textile business.”
Kalan added his family is a bunch of creatives who have an eye for design.
“There is nothing that makes us feel excited more than to see our customers happy when they lay their eyes on our impeccable curtains, blinds and fabrics.”
Kalan now runs the successful business with his brother and nephews.
Creating employment
The shop has employed 10 people who have assisted in the sustainability and growth of the business.
His advice to entrepreneurs is to have a clear developed plan of action, have a broad understanding of their business and most importantly have passion.
