Community market promotes local products
The community market also helps locals to get back on their feet
Impala Park’s first community market since the country emerged from hard lockdown brought together hundreds of residents from the area and surrounding neighbourhoods.
The event was held in the open field located on the corner of Elizabeth and Ridge roads, Impala Park, and ran from 9am to 2pm on October 31.
Event organisers said the stalls attracted a higher-than-expected crowd of local, and they described it as a successful and fun-filled community event. Supporters had the chance to purchase food, clothing, gifts, art and crafts, home-made goods and other goods from the vendors.
Marketgoers, including children, had the chance to showcase their dance moves as they participated in the Jerusalema dance challenge. The dancers who pleased the judges and audience alike received a grand prize of free one-month dance lessons at Strictly Dance in Benoni.
Market to help locals get back on their feet
René Marais, who is the founder of the market, said after all the economic disruptions caused by the lockdown, they took it upon themselves to come up with ways to regenerate the local economy, Impala Park in particular. They then decided to start hosting a monthly community market to offer local vendors, business owners and artisans the opportunity to come out and sell their wares and re-connect with the community in a Covid-19 compliant environment where safety, mask wearing, social distancing and sanitising are non-negotiable.
“It’s been a very successful market, and our vendors are grateful to have such opportunity to sell their products during the pandemic.”
The market runs every last Saturday of every month from 9am to 2pm. The organisers, however, plan to have a night market on December 19, from 3pm to 9pm.
The market also attracted sponsorship from a couple of local established businesses. The sound system at the market, Live Music Productions, was sponsored by Legendary Guardian – a local security company. Security providers at the event were CMS, AAA, Mamba, SWS and KPS who deployed their personnel to patrol, control traffic and see to it that everyone adhered to the Covid-19 rules.
