Stolen aluminium cable recovered, three arrested

Charges of impersonating energy department personnel, and possession of suspected stolen cable were levelled against the suspects

The EMPD Anti-Cable Theft Unit and Combined Private Investigations (CPI) members apprehended three suspects in connection with suspected stolen electrical cable in Witfield on November 5.

EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said, acting on a tip-off from concerned community members, the law enforcement officers went to Barris Road in Witfield at 7pm and found three men by a parked white Nissan delivery vehicle, branded with two small City Power Johannesburg door stickers.

“The suspects were caught with a 20m aluminium electrical cable, supplying street lights valued at R500 and failed to explain to officers what they were doing with the cable. Their Nissan was confiscated and impounded at the SAPS yard for safe keeping,” said Mokheseng.

Charges of impersonation, seeing as they are not energy department personnel, and possession of suspected stolen cable were levelled against the suspects.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

Ashley Rutherford, who was involved with the tip-off, thanked residents who raised concerns, responders, CPI, EMPD and the energy department for helping to rid Witfield of crime and fraud.
