Famsa raises the alarm against the scourge of women and children abuse

Marching through the streets of Reiger Park are some of the women who said enough is enough to gender-based violence.

A group of women took a stand against GBV by marching through the streets of Reiger Park on November 13.

The GBV victim empowerment awareness march was organised by the Family and Marriage Society of South Africa (Famsa) East Rand, in partnership with local stakeholders, Community Crisis Centre, Victim Empowerment Centre and the Reiger Park Women’s and Youth desks.

Escorted by the Reiger Park police, participants held placards with messages such as “Stop raping children” and “We deserve love” as they marched through the streets.

Despite the poor turn out from community members, attendees continued to send a strong message to the community to stop abusing women and children. They also handed out educational pamphlets to residents.

Suzan Mkwanazi, Famsa social worker, said: “We wanted to raise the plight of women and children in South Africa to convey a message to perpetrators to refrain from what they are doing. Many women and children are being killed lately and many die at the hands of their loved ones. We also wanted to let the community know about our new victim empowerment programme funded by National Development Agency.”
