Family needs help after house fire

A family lost some of its belongings in a fire that razed their rented home in Reiger Park on November 27.

The items lost by the Matata family in the blaze include two bunk beds, blankets, clothes, a laptop and a bag containing chronic medication.

According to the family, the devastating fire broke out at around 6.30am in one of their bedrooms, and they believe that it was sparked by an electrical fault.

One of the family members, Musiyiss Matata, said he had just exited the house and was in the car on his way to a meeting when his wife came out screaming to tell him that the house had caught fire.

“I immediately rushed into the house where blankets and two bunk beds were in flames. I used a bucket to fetch water from the outside tap to extinguish the fire, but it was too strong and it had already spread to the kitchen and dining room,” Matata said.

Neighbours helped and they managed to extinguish the fire before it could spread to other rooms.

“We are still shocked because we never expected to lose our hard-earned belongings. Luckily, we managed to save our identity documents and passports which were in another room,” Matata said.
