Using soccer to keep youngsters off the streets

The aim of the initiative is to keep youngsters off the streets by getting them into sport

In an effort to empower the youth, a few Boksburg North residents recently started soccer teams for youngsters in the community.
Tshepo Lebeoana, Mpho Rathaba and Lucky le Roux said they began the initiative because they don’t want to see young people getting involved in crime or drug abuse.
“We want to keep children off the streets and ensure they have a place to go where they can develop skills and do something constructive. Some of the children are very talented, and we want them to follow their dreams,” said Lebeoana.
He invited community members from Boksburg North and surrounding areas between the ages of eight and 15 to join them.
“We have three soccer teams and will be able to form even more teams if more people want to participate. Coaches are also welcome to become part of the initiative. We follow all Covid-19 protocols and we practice at facilities such as the Abe Meyer Park on weekday afternoons when it is allowed, ” he added.
He highlighted that they are in need of sponsors to make a success of the initiative.
“We are in need of soccer equipment, such as soccer balls, soccer boots, cones, shin guards, bibs and training clothes. We would appreciate it if members of the community could assist us in this regard. We can achieve great things with help from the public,” he explained.
