Power crisis: SPCA appeals for back-up generators
Medication for animals may become spoiled or ineffective as a result of these frequent outages
The Boksburg SPCA says frequent power outages in Boksburg East deprives its clinic the ability to function properly, putting its refrigerated medication at risk of becoming spoiled or ineffective.
As a result of these cut-offs, the animal society has issued an urgent appeal for help to replace or repair its dysfunctional back-up generator.
According to Vicky Finnemore, the Boksburg SPCA manager, apart from the planned rotational power cuts, the area is hit by almost day-long outages at least twice a month. And these unexplained prolonged blackouts make things challenging for the centre.
“Our current generator is starting but not putting out power, so we are appealing to any local business or individual who can assist with this repair or donation of a new or second-hand generator in working order (3KVa generator) to the Boksburg SPCA,” appealed Finnemore.
In the latest blackout, the society’s facility on Kruger and Railway streets was left without power for more than 14 hours when an outage hit the area at about 7pm on February 8.
“This means our office and clinic are compromised, medicines in fridges are at risk as freezers are defrosting and this may render the medication no longer viable.”
Finnemore explained that their healthcare facility depends on electricity to function normally. It needs power to run everything, from telephones to refrigerate medications and countless other tasks.
