Fundraising bowls tourney a highlight for the bowling fraternity

Teams enjoyed a bout of banter, forgiving greens and a dose of healthy competition.

Proudly donning their club colours, 48 avid bowls players stepped onto the greens at The Lake Club Benoni to take part in the sixth annual Vital Engineering Trips fundraising bowls tournament, in aid of Benoni Lake Bowling Club, on October 23.

Running across three weeks, 16 teams, featuring national and district players from across Ekurhuleni, vied for top honours.

The tournament was initiated by the late Mike Blackstock, a member of the club who worked at Boksburg-based Vital Engineering, and has been sustained by the company owner, Glen Pringle.

The day’s festivities not only serve as a celebration of the club’s ongoing growth but raise funds to facilitate future expansion projects.

“The Benoni Lake Bowling Club has been named the Ekurhuleni Bowls Club of the Year for the past three successive years,” said bowling stalwart and organiser of the tournament Ted Jarvis

He added that it is heartening to have so many talented individuals testing their mettle while engaging in a sport which may no longer be viewed as ‘old man’s marbles’ but still enjoys less support than mainstream sporting disciplines.

“The tournament further contributes to the memory of former members while actively building on to its future.

“We are proud of our club and partnerships with local business that share our passion for community development through sport.”

The event, as usual, was well supported, organised and enjoyed by all participants.

John Molupi, Joe and Toy Zietzman, of Benoni Lake Club, claimed first place, followed by Wilma Richarson, Estelle King and Dennis Rehbock, also of the club, trailed by Willem Viljoen, Sam Nqongwane and Dawid Pieterse, of Benoni Bowling Club, claiming third position.
