Poor turnout for blood drive at AGS Lighuis

SANBS hosted a blood drive at the AGS Lighuis in Witfield on February 20.

According to local donor relations practitioner Trude Gaarekoe, the national blood bank collected 11 units of blood during the event.

“We expected a better turnout as we collected about 32 units of blood at the church before. I believe the turnout was poor because the market at the church was cancelled due to Covid-19. The market usually attracts more people,” she said.

Gaarekoe expressed her gratitude to everybody who came out to donate blood.

“I would also like to thank Christell Ward for helping to organise the event,” the local donor relations practitioner added.

Furthermore, she urged members of the public to continue to donate blood.

The donor centre at the East Rand Mall remains accessible. Their operating hours will be from 8am to 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 3pm on Saturdays. Donors are advised to use entrance three.

Minimum requirements to be a donor:
• Be between the ages of 16 and 75
• Weigh 50kg or more
• Be in good health
• Consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient
• Lead a sexually safe lifestyle.
