Support local athletic club’s fund-raising initiative
The main objective of the residents’ initiative is to help senior citizens improve their fitness levels
The Scribante Golden Walkers Athletic Club recently announced that the deadline for community members to purchase raffle tickets for Marietjie Gouws’s handmade 3D painting has been extended from March 6 to June 26.
The walking club, which Andries Scribante Haven residents started at the end of last year, is selling raffle tickets for Gouws’s painting to raise funds for the club.
According to the chairperson of the club, Donovan Coopman, the club decided to extend the date to allow more people to buy their tickets.
“We’re urging the public to support the project as the profits will help us to pay for kits that we want to buy for the club. We enjoyed last year’s outing to Rietvlei in Alberton and would like to organise more getaways.
“The more raffle tickets people buy, the better chance they have to win the painting. Businesses are also welcome to buy tickets,” Coopman said.
The landscape painting is valued at R3 500.
Gouws, who is a committee member of the club, taught herself to make 3D paintings about two years ago at the age of 70.
“After losing my job, I decided to sell paintings for extra income. I never had any art lesson, but I come from an artsy family and I always had a passion for photography.
“I try to make every painting unique. I begin by building a box-like structure and then I paint the background. When I’m done with the background, I enhance it with items such as clay, real branches and treated leaves,” the self-taught artist explained.
Members of the walking club walk about three kilometres in areas such as Cason Road and Champion Street, Boksburg North, on Mondays and Thursdays at 4pm.

Any member of the public over 60 years is welcome to join the club.
