Young people feeds children in Ramaphosa
The beneficiaries are aged between five and 15 years
With the little they have, a group of young people from Ramaphosa informal settlement have taken it upon themselves to feed the impoverished children in the area.
The group, which consists of seven members, have established the Lehae Charity Organisation, which is in the process of being registered as an NPO.
The organisation aims to eradicate poverty and bring hope to these children.
According to Nwabisa Mbizeni, on February 7 and 21 they have fed over 100 children who come from vulnerable families. The children are aged between five and 15 years.
Their feeding project took place at Noncedo Day Care Centre, where these children were divided into groups in each class.
Mbizeni, who looked after her siblings after their parents died, said most of the children who they have identified have young mothers who are not employed.
“We saw a need to reach out to these children because by giving them a meal for a day, it makes a difference,” said Mbizeni.
Another member, Andile Jafta, said: “As a young person who grew up in Ramaphosa, I have seen that young woman who comes from poor families end up selling their bodies to get a meal. As an organisation, we are trying to bridge the gap and provide these children and instil independence that they don’t have to sell themselves for a meal.”
The organisation’s treasurer, Tumelo Lekanye, said they hope to expand this initiative to a broader community outreach where they would give out sanitary pads, clothes and food hampers to needy children.
“We would like to thank Stallion Pick n Pay and Venter Butchery for the donation that we got which contributed to the feeding project,” said Lekanye.
