The Advertiser speaks to Spring Fiesta boss

In case you’ve been wondering about the state and future of one of Boksburg’s biggest parties amid the pandemic, which has globally compromised the entertainment industry – wonder no more.

The Advertiser caught up with the Spring Fiesta festival director, Ricardo da Costa, on the future of the event – which annually drew thousands of party-goers around Ekurhuleni and to a lesser extent, Gauteng.

Like many traditional entertainment gatherings, ‘Ekurhuleni’s biggest party’ has not taken place since 2019 at its traditional base, the Wild Waters complex, courtesy of the coronavirus.

Da Costa said: “Covid has changed the landscape in terms of how we view and see events now and in the future. Last year we weren’t able to host the main event but I opened a venue in Fourways called Altitude Beach, which is a beach club.

“We hosted a Spring Fiesta takeover there in November to keep the brand going. We did a deal with the SABC where we shot the day for broadcast.
“We certainly didn’t just park the bus and wait for things to get back to normal because we don’t know when normal will be.

“I’m hopeful that something will happen this year but also managing my expectations if that isn’t the case. We were supposed to celebrate our 10th-anniversary last year, so it’s been moved to this year, and we will plan to do something.

“If we’re not able to do the main event, we will do a kind of condensed version at Altitude Beach. At least we’re not out of sight, out of mind to keep the brand alive. We are certainly not going anywhere and we still have a long legacy build upon.

“Between Spring Fiesta and H2O, we are not going anywhere.”
