Van Dyk Park residents Nicolene and Jackolene Jonker finally tied the knot on February 5 after they had to postpone their wedding day twice, due to Covid-19.
Nicolene said it was love at first sight when they met at a gay club in Boksburg about four years ago.
“We started chatting at the club and at the end of the evening, we exchanged phone numbers. I was waiting to hear from her; so excited, but didn’t until the next afternoon when she sent me a Facebook message to tell me I had given her the wrong number,” Nicolene explained.
The newlyweds dated for a year before moving in together.
“After a year we decided to move in together. The same day I moved in with her I repainted the home inside and painted ‘will you marry me?’ on the wall. She said yes!” Nicolene said.
The couple started planning their dream wedding; however, they had to change their plans a few times due to Covid-19.
“We planned to get married on April 10, but then a lockdown was announced.
“We were both so devastated that we would not be able to get married that month. On top of that, I tested positive for Covid-19 in April but was lucky enough not to have any symptoms.
“We moved the wedding to June 19, in winter, and although not keen on this date we agreed to go ahead. Unfortunately, lockdown regulations were strengthened again, so we decided to postpone the wedding to February 5,” Nicolene said.
The lovebirds said their I dos at Makiti in Krugersdorp.
“There were a few hiccups. Like Jackolene completely forgot about her bouquet, but overall the day was so amazing.
“We were so blessed to be able to finally do it.
“We had all the gay-pride colours for a theme, including colourful masks for all the guests to wear. Everyone enjoyed themselves so much.
“All Covid-19 regulations were adhered to. We were restricted to 100 guests, and about 15 people could not attend due to Covid-19 and other reasons.
“We also lost money because we postponed the wedding,” Nicolene pointed out, adding each day they had to wait to get married brought them closer together.
“The wait was worth it. I’m happy to say I married my best friend and my soulmate.
“I would do it all over again as long as it’s with her,” she said.
