ANC, EFF clash mars slain woman’s memorial service

A 31-year-old suspect appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court for the first time on April 9.

The memorial service of Makgotso Modisakeng, the 29-year-old woman who was found with her throat slit in Boksburg North, was disrupted when EFF members clashed with ANC supporters on the evening of April 13.

The memorial service, which was attended by friends, neighbours and EFF and ANC members, took place at the deceased’s home on Third Street, Boksburg North.

During the memorial service, EFF followers clashed with ANC members when they wanted to display their party’s banner on the table.

Political leaders of the EFF rejected the ANC’s sentiments and stated Modisakeng was a proud member of the EFF so they couldn’t have both banners on the table.

This sparked arguments between both political parties until a resolution was met; however, the resolution didn’t suit some ANC members, which prompted some of them to leave.

EFF and ANC supporters gathered at the deceased’s home on Third Street, Boksburg North, for a memorial service on April 13.

The Madisakeng family, who was coming from Tsakani, arrived late after attendees had waited for them from 6pm to 7.30pm when the organisers decided to proceed with the programme.

Speaking on behalf of neighbours, Eric Mashinini said Modisakeng was a humble young woman who had no problems with anyone.

“I got to know her a year ago when she started living with her boyfriend here. Because my shack was close to hers, she would always ask me to put her meat in my fridge before they bought their own. She was a nice woman,” Mashinini said.

Her friend of more than 10 years, Nurse Mbewe, couldn’t hold back her tears when she spoke about Makgotso.

Makgotso Modisakeng was found dead on April 4 in her rented room in Boksburg North.

“Makgotso and I were close friends since the age of 18. We’ve known each other while she was still staying with her sister in Angelo informal settlement. When I heard the news I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it. She was a friendly and loyal person who got along with everyone,” Mbewe said.

Modisakeng was buried on April 14 in Tsakani. Meanwhile, a 31-year-old man who is said to be her boyfriend, has been charged with murder, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.

He appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court for the first time on April 9.
