Middle Road family desperate to have sewage problem resolved

The concerned residents have received numerous reference numbers but nothing has been done.

A sewerage spill caused by a blocked manhole in Middle Road has seen sewage flowing into the property of the Anthonio family for the past nine days.

According to 83-year-old Andrew Anthonio, the sewage has been flowing into their yard since April 14.

“We have to deal with an unbearable stench every day and cannot even use our lavatory because of the blocked manhole in the street,” he said.

Anthonio said municipal workers came out on April 17 but told the family their truck’s pipe was broken.

“They came back the following day and again promised to come back but they never did,” Anthonio said.

Sewage in the family’s yard is a daily occurrence.

His son, Gary Anthonio, said they have reported the matter to the Ekurhuleni call centre and received numerous reference numbers.

The son said this was not the first time they have experienced this problem. “We believe the frequently blocked manhole is due to the influx of businesses in the area. We are appealing to the metro to assist us because we cannot live like this.”

According to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the metro is currently attending to the sewer blockage. ” The team was unable to clear it initially due to a lack of as-built information of the sewer network. The information has now been sourced and a team has been dispatched,” Dlamini said.
