Atlasville resident warns others against using rat poison
According to animal experts, the practice of using the deadly poison is threatening local wildlife.
A concerned resident told the Advertiser the trend in using rat poison in Atlasville has unintended consequences as it has resulted in many birds being poisoned.
According to Bernie Young, a volunteer at the South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (SAWRC), she has noted a sharp increase in the number of sick birds brought to the rehab centre after eating poisonous substances.
“I can understand that our suburbs were recently infested with rats following the delays in waste removal, but using poison to get rid of them has unintended consequences to birds as they also eat the food laced with poisonous substances,” explained Young.

Young pointed out there are other ways residents can use to trap rats and urged them to contact her if they need advice on how to set traps to try and control rats. Young can be reached on 083 758 5294.
