Owner who allegedly shot his two dogs to appear in court this week
Boksburg SPCA inspector Hope Mokalapa found the bodies of two dogs with gunshot wounds.
The owner of the two dogs that were allegedly shot in Atlasville in 2019 is set to appear in Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on July 30.
The suspect was arrested on October 3 after the Boksburg SPCA opened a case against the owner after receiving a post mortem from a veterinarian which showed the dogs died from gunshot wounds.
The man has since been out on bail. He was charged with cruelty to animals and discharging a firearm in a public space.
According to the police, the court has since requested that the suspect should be booked into a public mental hospital for psychiatric observation.
On the day of the incident, officers from the Boksburg North SAPS responded to a call about a man who allegedly shot two of his dogs.
According to Boksburg North police spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube, on arrival, the police spoke to a 24-year-old man who alleged his 26-year-old brother was attacked by his two dogs.
“Police spoke to the owner of the dogs, who said his life was in danger because he was attacked by the dogs before he shot them. Police exercised their duties, which is to combat, investigate and maintain order, so they confiscated his firearm as required by the Firearm Control Act 60 of 2000 for safekeeping,” Ramaube said.
The scene was then handed over to the Boksburg SPCA.
Inspector Hope Mokalapa of the Boksburg SPCA was the one who attended to the incident in the presence of SAPS members.
Mokalapa found the bodies of two dogs that had been shot and then arranged for a post mortem from a veterinarian after removing the two carcasses.
