St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls congratulates its learners who took part in the 2021 National English Olympiad.

According to the South African Council for English Education (SACEE)’s website, the English Olympiad is an annual nationwide examination open to learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12.

It aims to enrich and deepen the candidates’ appreciation for the English language and its literature.
The title of this year’s English Olympiad was This is my story and contained the theme, People and Personas.

“Nine St Dominic’s girls entered the English Olympiad this year, which started with a lockdown, necessitating online reading and discussions. Not an ideal space for open-hearted group chats about the nuances of literature,” said Sharon Antonizzi from the school’s marketing department.

“We persevered, eventually having to ‘meet’ after school (separating the different grades), which meant talking loudly and animatedly through our masks across the classroom aisles!

“We discovered so much about one another. The theme opened new revelations and honest discussions about the importance of the individual story that we carry within us.

“The exam proved to be challenging, inviting the girls to find their voice and engage with the topics’ demands. We walked away with an array of bronze and silver awards and a gold award. Well done to all our girls and special congratulations to Nikita Azevedo (Grade 12), who was placed in the top 100 in South Africa.”
