WATCH: Reiger Park murder accused claims police assault during arrest

The court has ordered medical attention for the accused as the Hawks await a J88 report following his allegation of assault during his arrest.

Jamal Meyer, the second accused in the Reiger Park deadly shooting, has alleged that police brutally assaulted him during his arrest.

The 24-year-old Meyer was arrested on August 16, before making his first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

He faces the same charges as his co-accused, 23-year-old Regan Collis: four counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and two counts of unlawful possession of firearms.

During Meyer’s brief appearance, his lawyer, attorney Samkele Kuzani, told the court that police had allegedly assaulted his client during his arrest.
Kuzani said Meyer had suffered lacerations and bruising and complained of a sharp pain in his chest.

He asked the court to order that Meyer receive medical attention.
The court granted the request and ordered that Meyer be medically examined while in custody.
Kuzani indicated that the alleged assault would be raised when the accused returns to court for their formal bail application on August 25.

Speaking to journalists after the proceedings, Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said investigators would await the medical assessment and the resulting J88 medical report.

“Once he has been medically checked, this will indicate whether or not the injuries that he claims to have were inflicted during his arrest,” said Mogale.
She said the explanation for the alleged injuries would most likely be handled by IPID, depending on the findings.

More arrests possible
The Hawks also said the investigation remains ongoing and that more arrests cannot be ruled out.
Mogale said investigators were still working to identify and trace other possible suspects linked to the killings.

The Hawks are also investigating whether Meyer has any links to dangerous gangs in Reiger Park.
“It’s still under investigation. We have to check his profile on our systems and be able to ascertain whether or not he is part of a gang or he was being initiated,” said Mogale.

Meyer claims no previous cases
During the proceedings, Meyer’s defence told the court that he has no previous convictions or pending criminal cases and that this is his first criminal case.

Meyer is currently detained at Boksburg Prison, while Collis is being held at Modderbee Correctional Services for safety reasons.

The two accused are expected to be joined in the same matter when they return to the court on August 25 for their formal bail applications.
The state has indicated that it will oppose bail.
