Grannies take centre stage
Speakers called on the community to support women facing poverty, unemployment and abuse, and to create opportunities that empower women, protect older persons and inspire young girls.
The Masibambaneni Organisation Elderly Care Centre and Reiger Park Elderly Centre joined hands with NICRO, Old Mutual, the Ray of Hope Foundation and the Department of Social Development on Women’s Day (August 9) to honour local grannies and highlight community support services under the theme Building Resilient Economies for All.
The Dress Elegant with the Grannies event in Reiger Park brought together stakeholders, community members and elders for a morning of celebration, awareness and practical advice on family support, crime prevention and empowerment.
On behalf of NICRO, Nelisiwe Khanyi said the theme, Building Resilient Economies for All, was a reminder that strong economies begin with strong families built on women’s resilience and wisdom.

The event highlighted NICRO’s local services, including counselling for victims of crime and gender-based violence, court-referred family mediation, perpetrator intervention programmes, and diversion and life skills programmes for youth.
Social Development social worker Christina Mokoena urged elderly residents to stand their ground with their children and visit the department’s offices if they face problems at home.
