Windmill Park residents call for change
Residents said they've had enough of unruly activities that are happening in Windmill Park.
The lack of police visibility and other issues in Windmill Park has prompted residents to draft a memorandum of grievances to the Dawn Park SAPS.
The memorandum, which has been handed to Ward 43 Clr Carolana Marais (who agreed to hand it over
to the police), states the community demands a 24-hour police visibility in the area and for the police to clamp down on drug issues and crime.
The residents are also calling for the police to protect State witnesses and update them on ongoing cases.
According to a resident who has been living in the area for 28 years, Windmill Park has been flooded with drug houses and crime is regularly committed at night.
“Recently, our electricity boxes have been tampered with and all the cables were stolen. We want the police to intervene because crime is getting out of hand.”
Windmill Park community leader Leon Rooi said: “We’ve had enough of unruly activities that are happening in Windmill Park. As a community, we stand against drug lords that have turned our children into drug addicts. We also want the police to deal with taverns that are not operating within their stipulated time. A lot of people have been robbed at night and in the morning while going to work. We want the police to attend to the complaints of the community.”
Dawn Park SAPS station commander Johannes Makhubo disputed claims there is a lack of police visibility. “The area is patrolled by about six vehicles, day and night. We have ongoing operations targeting drug lords and drug houses with tip-offs from the community. We often only find small amounts of drugs but we are investigating the masterminds.”
