New 30-20-megalitre reservoir to enhance water supply for Boksburg communities

Construction of the project started in 2019, with a total budget of R88 611 448.69 exclusive of VAT.

The new 30-megalitre facility is being built within the existing Cossins reservoir site at the corner of Rondebult and South Boundary roads in Dawn Park.

Once completed, the facility will benefit the communities and businesses in Rondebult, Mapleton, Roodekop Industries and Klippoortjie.
The project has so far created a total of 43 job opportunities and sub-contracting opportunities to four local SMMEs. The overall progress on the project to date is 38%.

A total of 21 983 residential and business stands will be supplied by the reservoir zone.
The Cossins reservoir zone has a potential to supply an additional 53 606 stands if linked to the Dawn Park supply zone.

Construction of the project commenced in November 2019, with a total budget of R88 611 448.69 exclusive of VAT.
This is part of the flagship initiative by the City of Ekurhuleni aimed at providing security of water supply to residents and businesses.

Scope of work and terms of reference
This project entails the construction of a new 30-megalitre reservoir with associated pipe work on site and includes upgrading of the supply pipe from a Rand Water connection (RW4529).

The project involves the investigation, design and construction of a pre-stressed reinforced concrete reservoir (30 ML Cossins Reservoir) to augment the deficient storage capacity in the specific supply zone.
At present, the available storage on the site comprises of a single 8 ML reservoir supplied from the RW1461 connection via a bulk supply pipeline that runs on the right-hand side of Rondebult Road towards the South.

The zone is served from the reservoir and the residual pressures in the supply zone are acceptable, except for Mapleton Extension 10 and 12, where the peak pressures can drop to below 24m.

The scope of the deliverables can be summarised as follows:
• Construction of a 30-megalitre reinforced concrete water reservoir with the associated pipework
• Construction of concrete chambers complete with the required meters, pipe specials, control and isolation valves to ensure effective operation of the system
• Paved access road
• Clear view fencing
