Boksburg Legal Practitioners invites local attorneys to join

In ensuring the interests of legal practitioners and candidate legal practitioners in Boksburg are taken care of, a new association which forms part of the former Boksburg Attorney’s Association has been launched.

Rekindled with the name Boksburg Legal Practitioners Association, the association is set to promote the interests of its members and the administration of justice.

The Advertiser spoke to the chairperson of the association, Raymond Mashazi, who has a wealth of experience, during the first executive meeting at the offices of Nkosi Nkosana Incorporated in Bardene on September 10.

He highlighted that the former Boksburg Attorney’s Association was halted in 2008 because there was no constitution.

“After seeing a need to facilitate this kind of service in Boksburg, we decided to start afresh and came up with a constitution. In February, we gathered at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court, where we spoke to fellow legal practitioners who agreed on the formation of the association and the adoption of the constitution. On August 26, a virtual meeting was held where the exco members were nominated and appointed,” said Mashazi.

Mashazi said based on the constitution, the exco will have to meet regularly, unlike before, and they are hoping to have more members joining the association in time.

“The focus will be to give direction and purpose to the administration of justice. The association will also build relationships among legal practitioners in Boksburg, as well as deal with conflicts that emanate in the courts by affording legal practictioners the opportunity to express their views on matters affecting the legal profession. Through the association, we will also educate the public about our services and deal with or refer complaints that the general public might have about a certain attorney or law firm to the relevant departments.”

So far, the association has a few members who are already on the database.
“There are many law firms in Boksburg but we don’t know them, so through this association it will help us to track them and build a relationship among ourselves in Boksburg.”

Mashazi highlighted that the association will have sub-committees which, among others, include criminal and civil law where police officers, prison officials, social workers, legal aid, the NPA and magistrates who will serve under these committees respectively.

During the meeting, the executive members concluded that the annual membership fee will be R500 for admitted legal practitioners, while for candidate legal practitioners it will be R100.

They also agreed that their AGM will be held on October 29, pending the finalisation of the venue.
