Supervisors at various voter registration sites in Boksburg expressed concerns about the IEC’s system experiencing technical glitches during the kick-off of the registration weekend today (September 18).

Apparently the system was down in the morning and they had to resort to capturing information manually.

Some of the registration sites that the Advertiser visited included Oosrand Secondary School, Conquerors Through Christ Church (Ramaphosa), Christian Reformed Church (Reiger Park), Parkdene Primary School, Sunward Park High School and the Sunward Park Recreational Centre.

There was a poor turnout at all sites throughout the day. At around noon, when the Advertiser visited the site, about 200 people had already registered at the Conquerors Through Christ Church while at other sites they had only serviced about 30 to 40 people.

First time voter, Keanan de Jager (21), who registered at Oosrand Secondary School, said the reason why his registering is that he wants to see change in Reiger Park in terms of a new proactive councillor and housing developments.

Another eligible voter, Mandla Mahlambi (69), said ahead of the local government elections he wants to see more people being employed and electricity problems in his ward being sorted out.
