A resident raised concerns after she spotted a group of matric learners from local schools indulging in alcohol while in full school uniforms on October 22.
The group of learners from Boksburg High School, Hoërskool Voortrekker and Sunward Park High School were spotted partying at Village Mall on Market Street.
The resident who alerted the Advertiser said she was concerned that the learners partied with no masks on and were in large numbers amid the coronavirus outbreak.
When the Advertiser arrived at the site, just after 14:30, most of the pupils present there were matrics in their school uniforms.
The Advertiser spoke to some of the learners who said they were celebrating their last day at school before the official start of the final exams on October 27.
Learners were seen drinking alcohol with other smoking hubbly bubbly.
A few minutes after the Advertiser had arrived, members of a local security company, Boksburg SAPS and EMPD officers arrived and dispersed the crowd.
Learners were heard talking about locations for their alternative partying spot.
Management at the affected schools told the Advertiser that they were not aware of the incident. However, Hoërskool Voortrekker deputy principal, Gerhard Joubert, said their school is investigating the incident and those found to have been involved could face disciplinary actions.
Meanwhile, Boksburg High School principal Enoch Thango revealed that his school have had previous cases where learners bunked school and went to chill at Village Mall.
After realising that their learners were patronising the said spot, the school then assigned one of its security guards to monitor the area during school hours and see to it that any learner found there within those hours is dealt with accordingly.
“We have also approached the Boksburg SAPS to assist us to patrol that area during schools hours and even after school,” said Thango.
