EMPD tip of the week

EMPD officers sometimes come across drivers who question why they are penalised for holding a cellphone while behind the steering wheel on a public road.

“The fine for holding a cellphone with your hands or another part of your body while driving is R500. Motorists often tell us they were not talking on the device, only holding it or texting. This is still wrong. The offence is not about talking but about holding the device.

“We encourage drivers to rather instal hands-free sets to avoid holding their cellphone while driving,” explained EMPD Insp Kobeli Mokheseng.
