Hawks swoop on illegal drug lab in Lakefield

Police seized drug-manufacturing equipment, chemicals and two vehicles for further investigation.

Four men were arrested at a house in Lakefield on December 14 for allegedly operating an illegal drug lab.

According to Capt Ndivhuwo Mulamu of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation and West Rand K9 units executed a search and seizure warrant, which resulted in the successful apprehension of the men.

“The investigation team followed up on intelligence regarding suspicious drug-related activities in the Lakefield area. A search and seizure warrant was issued and police kept surveillance at the positively identified premises,” he explained.

“Upon arrival on Tuesday, the four suspects were arrested for allegedly processing illegal drugs suspected to be Cat with an estimated value of R3-million.

“Police seized drug-manufacturing equipment, chemicals and two vehicles (a Nissan NP200 and a Nissan Almera) for further investigation.

“Four suspects were charged with illegal dealing in drugs.”
They were expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on December 17.
