Fire at safe house claims life of one adult and two children

It is alleged that a lit candle was the cause of the fire.

Three people, including two girls between the ages of seven and eight, died in a house fire at a child care centre in Villa Liza last night (February 3).

According to City of Ekurhuleni DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi, firefighters from Vosloorus responded swiftly to the fire in Villa Liza just before 23:00.

“A crew of nine firefighters found members of the public frantically battling the blaze with buckets brigade systems. As professionals, they took over and extinguished the blaze.
“The four bedroom house was saved. However, three lives were already lost. An adult female in her 50s and the two girls died,” said Ntladi.

They were declared dead on scene by paramedics. Ntladi added two teen boys survived unharmed.

“It is alleged the cause of the fire was a lit candle. There wasn’t electricity in the area prior to the blaze and candles were used for lighting. The three deceased seemed to have suffered from lack of oxygen due to smoke inhalation.”

Police confirmed the incident and stated that an inquest docket has been opened at the Dawn Park SAPS.
This is a developing story.
