Security guard shot dead in Witfield robbery

The security guard was shot twice in the back.

Police have launched a manhunt after a security guard was shot dead during a business robbery at SK Supermarket Retail & Wholesale on Main Street on February 8.

According to Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Justice Ramaube, the incident took place at 15:00.

“A 44-year-old victim and store owner told police that four men stormed into the store. One of them was armed and pointed a gun at the owner and two employees. The robbers demanded that they open a counter door,” said Ramaube.

The robbers started to load cigarettes into their bags and then noted a security guard approaching the store. It appears the guard responded to an alarm that went off in the store.

“The armed robber who noticed the guard first then hid,” said Ramaube.

He shot the security guard twice in the back, who was certified dead on scene.

Ramaube said it is alleged the robbers took the guard’s service pistol before they fled with items such as cellphones.

They were seen fleeing the scene in a white sedan with an unknown registration. Police are investigating a case of murder and business robbery. No arrests have been made.

Police are appealing to community members to come forward with information that can lead to the apprehension of the robbers.

Anyone with information may call the police on 08600 10111 or its Trio Task Team on 071 675 6986.
