Local vax site remains resolute in its fight against Covid-19

In its early days, the site was vaccinating 700 people a day on average.

Despite the evident downward trend in the number of people visiting Covid-19 vaccination sites to take their jabs, Medicare 24’s pop-up vaccination site at the Retail Park in Boksburg continues to strive to ensure more people are protected against the virus.

The centre management encourages those who are not vaccinated or due to getting their booster shots to take advantage of the vaccination site, which is open seven days a week.

In partnership with the Department of Health and the City of Ekurhuleni, Medicare 24 officially launched the site early in September.

Its aims and objectives included vaccinating at least 2 000 people a day, thus helping to save lives and rebuild the economy.

In its early days, the site was vaccinating 700 people a day on average and from there the numbers increased as more people became aware of the facility, which offers walk-in and drive-through services.

The Advertiser revisited the site this week and found it’s still operating seven days a week from 07:00 to 20:00, Monday to Saturday, and 07:00 to 16:00 on Sundays.

However, the number of people who visit the site has fallen sharply to an average of about 250 per day.

According to the site manager, Nomvuyo Mngonyama, although they have seen a decline in the numbers of people coming to get jabs, the facility remains resolute in meeting its primary aim of getting citizens protected against Covid-19.

She pointed out that as long as there is still demand, the centre will remain open to the public and will continue to maintain its strong customer service standards.

Mngonyama said: “It’s good that vaccines have transformed the pandemic, but people need to understand that Covid-19 is still with us.

“Even with the government’s decision to lift some of the lockdown rules because of the encouraging trends in the data, people still need to be protected against the virus.

“The daily stats indicate that people are still being infected and that deaths due to Covid-19 are still occurring.

“Science has shown that Covid-19 vaccines offer better protection against severe illness as they reduce the risk of experiencing severe symptoms and dying.”
