Family in need of support to pay for cancer treatment
Lorinda Pienaar of Parkrand has been a caring nurse for years and now her family is appealing to the community to support their fund-raising initiatives that will help pay for her cancer treatment.
The 57-year-old has been suffering from stage four kidney and bladder cancer for four years.
According to her daughter, Shimoné Lombaard, she is hospitalised at the Netcare Milpark Hospital and is in urgent need of chemotherapy.
“She had chemotherapy before that was very successful, but unfortunately the type of chemo broke down her bone marrow and kidney function. The only chemo that can save her life is the new immunotherapy,” said Lombaard.
Lombaard highlighted that the treatment is, however, expensive and the family is leaving no stone unturned to raise funds for her mother.
“She is on medical aid, but it only covers a certain amount, therefore she must pay the remaining balance by herself. She is in a lot of pain at this stage and needs the therapy as it will start spreading, which she can’t afford as she only has one kidney left.”
Pienaar is in need of R252 000.
The family started a crowdfunding page (https://clickndonate.com/cancer-patient-in-urgent-need-goal-r625-000/) where members of the community can contribute.
Furthermore, the family is organising a Donkey Derby on February 26 at Boksburg Rugby Club at 17:00. For bookings, contact 082 452 7831.
“Any type of donation will help. If we can get the funds she can start immediately with the therapy and save her life. The longer we need to wait the more life-threatening it becomes.
“She is the breadwinner at home and has been boarded from work as she’s been a registered nurse her whole life. She previously worked at hospitals, including Netcare Union Hospital and Netcare Sunward Park Hospital. She was also a clinical facilitator at Charisma Healthcare Solutions.
“My mother always believed in saving other people’s lives and going out of her way to help people in need. She also did lots of home nursing for free to assist others. She is a very positive person and would love to get helped,” Lombaard added.
