Boksburg North SAPS is investigating a case of business robbery after a gang of armed robbers targeted the Clover SA depot in Parkhaven on February 20.
The robbers fled with employees’ cellphones and cash.
According to Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Const Justice Ramaube, two men in a silver Toyota Corolla arrived at the company’s gate at about 08:00 and asked to see an employee working in a CCT room.
“Police were told a security guard escorted them to the room. Upon arrival, one of the suspects threatened the employee with a gun, tied him up with shoelaces and took off his reflector jacket and locked him in his office.
“After a while, two bakkies full of passengers wearing reflector jackets came to the company. A few of the passengers gained access to the company through the pedestrian gate and went into the guardroom.
“The robbers held up about five security guards by showing their guns on their waists. They opened the gate for the about 20 passengers that were in the bakkies,” said Ramaube.
He said some of the robbers threatened employees with firearms as they were robbed of cellphones, money and private cars keys.
“It’s alleged one hostage managed to run out of the warehouse and the robbers then fled the scene. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.”
Ramaube pointed out business robberies in the Boksburg North precinct are on the rise and that its trio task team is doing its best to investigate these robberies.
“Through these investigations, we’ve also seen some arrests.”
Ramaube provided some tips to business owners to prevent business robberies:
• Ensure the employees you hire are trustworthy.
• Remember not to keep a large amount of cash in the store.
• Vary times and routes of travel for bank deposits
• Report any suspicious activity to the police on 071 675 6986.
