The Benoni Flying Squad’s (BFS) no-nonsense approach to crime-ridden communities led to more arrests and recoveries of stolen vehicles in Boksburg and surrounding towns.
In their latest bust between March 14 and 16, which preceded the previous weekend’s successes, BFS officers arrested eight suspects and recovered five vehicles, including a truck with its trailer, and made a major drugs bust.
Recovered vehicles
Acting on information received, officers recovered a Scania truck reportedly hijacked in the Heidelberg area while transporting goods worth about R1.5-million.
According to BFS spokesperson WO Grant Giblin, the truck was found abandoned in Bunyan Avenue in Benoni, but its trailer was not there.
However, further investigation led officers to a business park on Haggit Street in Dunswart, where four men were reportedly found off-loading the aluminium stock.
“An excess of 600 aluminium strips with a value of around R1.5-m was recovered, and the suspects were immediately arrested,” said Giblin.
Four other vehicles were recovered. A white Volkswagen Crafter was recovered in Spartan following a Midrand case, a white Volkswagen Golf was found in a Buhle Park supermarket following a Boksburg case, a silver Kia Picanto was found on Kemston Avenue in Benoni after a Boksburg North case and a white Toyota Hilux was found in the field next to the R25 in Kempton Park after an Etwatwa case.
Drug bust
Furthermore, BFS members made a drug bust in Norkem Park and Daveyton.
Also, following up on information, officers stormed an estate in Dunlin Road, Norkem Park, where a suspect was immediately arrested when six black bags full of dagga were found in his residence. On the scene, police also confiscated R1 000 believed to be the proceeds of crime.
A turn of events saw another suspect being arrested for bribery after he offered officers R1 100 in exchange for the Norkem Park suspected drug dealer’s freedom. The officers handcuffed the man upon handing over the cash to them.
Giblin reminded members of the public that bribing a police officer is a criminal offence that can lead to arrest and prosecution.
Two other suspected drug dealers were arrested after being found in possession of dagga in separate incidents on Huretse Street and at the Daveyton hostel.
Investigations continue in all cases and the suspects were scheduled to appear in their respective magistrate’s courts to face charges of possession of stolen goods, possession of stolen motor vehicle, possession of and dealing in drugs and bribery.
