A gang of criminals, one of them dressed in police uniform, recently hijacked a truck along Atlas Road in Dunswart as it was on its way to deliver a consignment of goods worth thousands of rands to a Boksburg East-based company.
According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sgt Ntsako Ledwaba, the truck driver told Boksburg police it was at about 10:00 when the driver of a vehicle, dressed in police uniform, signalled for him to pull over, and he cooperated as he thought they were real cops.
The driver from the vehicle then approached him and asked to see his driver’s licence, and he inspected the truck. After that, he instructed the driver to follow him to his vehicle where there were three other men, who the victim initially thought were plain-clothed officers.
One of the bogus officers pointed a gun at the truck driver and told him they wanted the truck before the driver was shoved into the hijacker’s vehicle. His face was covered with a beanie and they instructed him to lie down while driving off with him.
Along the way, he was transferred to another vehicle.
“While travelling, the truck driver’s supervisor called and the hijackers told him to answer the phone and pretend that everything was okay. He complied, despite the supervisor telling him that the call was triggered by some suspicious activities in the truck,” said Ledwaba.
The driver was subsequently dumped in an undisclosed secluded location, a maize farm, before he ran to a nearby street and asked for help.
Boksburg police are investigating a case of hijacking, and anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the hijackers is encouraged to contact the SAPS Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
Recurring hijacking modus operandi
Previous police reports have shown that hijacking cases involving people dressed in police uniforms happen frequently in Boksburg and surrounding towns.
This publication has reported on several incidents where motorists had their vehicles hijacked after being pulled over by people believed to be real cops. In one of the recent incidents we reported on, an official EMPD officer was arrested along with his accomplices after allegedly attempting to hijack a truck transporting a consignment of masks along the N12 near Atlas Road.
The suspects were driving in a metro police vehicle fitted with blue lights and false number plates.
